Obama urges immigration reform and DREAM Act at July 4th citizenship ceremony

MSNBC reports that President Obama participated in a moving 4th of July naturalization ceremony of 25 active duty military members, from countries such as Ukraine, Cameroon, and Honduras. He used the opportunity to highlight the need for reforming our immigration system and the DREAM Act.  He is quoted as saying that “America’s success demands comprehensive immigration reform” and that “Dream Act,” legislation that would give young illegal immigrants a path toward permanent residency, was still necessary. The President further stated, “For just as we remain a nation of laws, we have to remain a nation of immigrants. That’s why as another step forward we’re lifting the shadow of deportation…from deserving young people who were brought to this country as children. That’s why we still need a Dream Act to keep talented young people who want to contribute to our society and serve our country . . .” We at Valverde and Rowell see the need the President is talking about firsthand with the numerous heartbroken families who come to us for help but existing immigration law does not provide any solutions.  My hope is that Congress will see that this is clearly a bipartisan issue and see the need for comprehensive immigration reform and the DREAM Act.
